Jacque Stessman
How did a teller become a district manager, with 284 team members reporting to her? She set the job as her goal and worked hard to reach it.
Jacque Stessman started her Wells Fargo career as a bookkeeper in Cedar Falls, Iowa, in 1983. She then worked as a teller for three years, moving to Des Moines, in the meantime. Within a year of her move, she took a customer service position and, next, assumed a personal banker role. Getting step-by-step experience, she realized that she had leadership potential and liked the risk of management.
She remembers sitting in a meeting in 1988, thinking, “I want that job,” as she listened to a district manager speak. It became her personal goal to manage all of Des Moines one day.
“Attitude got me where I am,” Jacque was quick to share. She explained that she was always willing to do extra work, even when raising her family as a single mom meant juggling her job with priorities at home. She also had managers who took the time to mentor her as she advanced into new positions within the company. “They had confidence in me, even when I had no experience as a manager,” she recalled.
In 2001 Jacque reached a second important goal, one she had held for 20 years. With the assistance of Wells Fargo’s tuition reimbursement program she was able to finish her college degree in business management.
Today Jacque is the community banking district manager for the entire Des Moines market. She has reached her goals and is convinced that her opinions matter to Wells Fargo’s upper management. She said emphatically, “I have always felt that I counted.”
