Deb Bloom has only been with Wells Fargo for three years, but she’s thrilled with what she terms “a different mentality” here. Comparing Wells Fargo to the other places she’s worked, she explained, “We’re value-based. Wells Fargo values your skills. Here it’s not who you know but what you know that counts.”

As a supervisor in the Fraud Detection area of Card Services, Deb makes an effort to take advantage of that different foundation by looking for ways to help her team members develop their skills and confidence. She also tries to spot their abilities, so that she can help direct them toward other positions. “I want them to be the best they can be,” she continued. “I want them to have those skills to advance.”

Deb likes to expose her team members to the following opportunities:

  • Meetings with group leads, not just as observers but by having prepared the agenda and sometimes conducting meetings with their peers.
  • Classes to learn Excel and PowerPoint, as well as any others that will help them be better equipped for their jobs now and in the future.
  • Speaking in front of peers and taking a leadership role during peer meetings.

Deb is quick to point out that she tries to imitate the fine example set by her own manager. “She’s my mentor – she’s great,” Deb said. “She makes you think. She never puts you down. She gives you information that guides you.”

In addition to helping others build their careers, Deb wants to enrich her own. She has taken classes to become a better supervisor, coach and communicator. In the future, she may look for additional opportunities at Wells Fargo. But, in the meantime, she’s learning all she can as a supervisor and helping as many of her team members as possible to grow.
