When Gloria So wanted to stretch her wings within Wells Fargo, she realized how difficult a career move can seem. Job postings can be generic, and it is often hard understanding exactly what other businesses do. That’s when she discovered the value of networking.

Gloria decided to meet others while doing some good at the same time. She led the United Way campaign in her area. She worked on Best Practices. She volunteered on various retail committees and joined the Corporate Diversity Council. Her enthusiasm peaks as she begins to talk about the Asian Connection Bay Area Team Member Resource Group that she’s been a part of since 2000. The group has grown to more than 700 Wells Fargo team members. “The Bay Area is 20 percent Asian…San Francisco is 40 percent! Many of those, about 70 percent, are foreign born. And we’ve learned that a large percentage of these customers prefer to do business in their native language. There is a huge opportunity there!” she said recently.

She continues to build a successful career at Wells Fargo. “I want to continue to learn and grow and bring to the table added value,” she said. “I’m on a continual journey.”

Her advice for others is simple: find a good mentor and, of course, “Network across geographical and functional lines to get a sense of where you fit in.”
