Background
As Wells Fargo team members, our work falls into seven important roles: Lead, Manage, Sell, Serve, Consult, Manage Projects and Leverage Technology.
A Success Profile consists of a defined set of critical competencies for each of these roles. These competencies, along with descriptions of outstanding behaviors that support each competency, gives you a picture of what success looks like in a particular role. For comparison purposes, marginal behaviors are also included in each success profile.
All Success Profiles contain competencies that support the four core values from The Visions and Values of Wells Fargo. Those four competencies are:
- Leads with Integrity
- Customer Focused
- Takes Accountability
- Diversity
Success Profiles are also broken into levels that are based on length of time in a role as well as the scope of one's role. Most profiles are divided into two levels: entry to mid-level and mid-to-senior level. Taken together, our Success Profiles support all of Wells Fargo’s job families and each of our unique jobs. Wells Fargo, in partnership with Crisp Publishing, also provides a variety of learning resources about the Success Profiles.
Shifting the Performance Curve
Why Understanding What Success Looks Like and Achieving It, Affects Wells Fargo's Performance

- The area under the connecting curves is the performance variance between the Level 3 performer and the Level 5 performer.
- There are usually 8-12 skills, knowledge sets, and/or personal attributes that represent the core difference between the Level 5 performer and the Level 3 performer. These are referred to as competencies.
- The success profile-comprised of 8-12 competencies-makes up for as much as 70% of the performance variance between Level 5 and Level 3 performers.
- Wells Fargo has defined success profiles for seven key roles throughout the organization.
- When companies link success profiles to the way they select, develop, and manage the performance of team members, they can get a 40-44% gain in productivity across the organization.
Profile Assessment
If you are interested in assessing your Success Profile strengths and development needs, select the profile assessment associated with your role (Lead, Manage, Sell, Serve, Consult, Manage Projects) at the bottom of this page. This self-assessment tool gives you an opportunity to rate your perception of how frequently you demonstrate the outstanding behaviors associated with the competencies.
Once you have completed the self-assessment, determine two or three key areas for development based on your assessment. Focus on the behaviors that you rated as "occasionally" or "rarely or never". For development ideas, look at the development ideas for the competency that you have identified as needing strengthening.
If you would like a more in-depth assessment, talk to your manager about the value going through Wells Fargo INSIGHT's multi-rater assessment process. You can also contact your Human Resources or Learning & Development Consultant to learn more about the INSIGHT's process.
