- Understand the qualifications that the manager has defined and think through how you will position your skills, accomplishments and experiences in terms of those qualifications.
- Rehearse questions you might be asked and how you will respond. (see sample behavioral interview questions)
- Present yourself professionally and dress appropriately.
- Arrive 5-10 minutes early so you'll be relaxed.
During the interview
- Demonstrate interest, enthusiasm and confidence.
- Be an attentive listener.
- Keep answers brief and focused.
- Don't complain about previous managers or jobs.
- Focus on how you can meet the manager's needs.
After the interview
- Ask for or exchange business cards.
- Thank him or her for interviewing you and inquire as to what the next steps will be.
- Offer to provide any additional information that would be helpful.
- Send a thank-you note confirming your interest in the position and how you could contribute to the department (or withdrawing from consideration if you don't wish to pursue the job).
