Interviewing Strategies

If you apply for a position through the jobs site, you may be called for a job interview. Here are some tips to help you prepare for the interview.

Before the Interview

  • Learn as much as you can about the job, the department, the business.
  • Understand the qualifications that the manager has defined and think through how you will position your skills, accomplishments and experiences in terms of those qualifications.
  • Rehearse questions you might be asked and how you will respond. (see sample behavioral interview questions)
  • Present yourself professionally and dress appropriately.
  • Arrive 5-10 minutes early so you'll be relaxed.

During the interview

  • Demonstrate interest, enthusiasm and confidence.
  • Be an attentive listener.
  • Keep answers brief and focused.
  • Don't complain about previous managers or jobs.
  • Focus on how you can meet the manager's needs.

After the interview

  • Ask for or exchange business cards.
  • Thank him or her for interviewing you and inquire as to what the next steps will be.
  • Offer to provide any additional information that would be helpful.
  • Send a thank-you note confirming your interest in the position and how you could contribute to the department (or withdrawing from consideration if you don't wish to pursue the job).
